Anirban Mitra’s works unravel like scrolls, weaving references from popular culture, myth, archives, and the artist's observations of local practices. His densely packed canvases resist a central focal point, allowing for a multiplicity of readings. Here, Bengali folk idioms are framed by contemporary digital interfaces, while the banal is placed in conversation with the historic. This collision of imagery from an array of sources is intentional—each reference is carefully selected carrying a history that reveals itself upon close looking.
For this body of work, the artist draws from regional science exhibitions, studies of anatomy, and colonial histories. Yet for Mitra, human anatomy is reimagined in the form of electrical fittings, rendered in neon hues that evoke the aesthetics of advertising. Much like a surgeon, Mitra dissects and reconstructs visual imagery, embedding critical inquiries into colonial pasts and questions of consumerism.
