Born in 1969 in Orissa, Alok Bal attained his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Post Graduate Diploma in Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University Baroda. Bal’s practice examines human existence in urban spaces, both this fascination and disillusionment with life in a metropolis. His works address ecological and social injustices, while simultaneously celebrating moments of community resilience.
His solo exhibitions include Inscribed Landscape (Sakshi Gallery, Mumbai, 2024), Sprawl (Gallery White, Baroda, 2019), Ember (Latitude 28, New Delhi, 2013), and Black Landscape (Priyasri Art Gallery, Mumbai, 2006; Anant Art Centre, Delhi, 2007). Bal has been a consistent presence at the India Art Fair and has participated in over 50 significant group exhibitions in India and abroad, including Shifting Focus (London, New York, New Delhi), REVIEW (CIMA Gallery, Kolkata), and Freedom to March (Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi & Nehru Centre, London).
Bal was awarded the Government National Scholarship in 1998 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. He has participated in art camps in India and other countries, including Uzbekistan, Cambodia, Egypt and Spain.
The artist lives and works in Baroda.
