Sujith SN’s route to becoming an artist was unconventional. After the death of his father, he considered following in his footsteps and joining the military, but realised early enough that his heart lay in becoming a painter. His beginnings as a draughtsman for construction sites can be seen in the architectural and spatial elements of many of his artworks.
Although he primarily creates works on paper, Sujith SN also occasionally works with other mediums like oil on canvas and photography. Characterised by a muted palette with the occasional presence of brighter colours, his work often explores the unchecked expansion of urban spaces and the resulting discomfiting sense of alienation.
Sujith SN’s first solo exhibition was in 2008 at Sakshi Gallery, Mumbai. He participated in the Khoj artist residency in Kolkata in 2009, and is the recipient of the FICA Emerging Artist Award (2011) and the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi State Award (2005). He was also longlisted for the Skoda Prize in 2011, and participated in the India Art Fair and Art Basel Hong Kong in 2016.
