Ratna Gupta

Ratna Gupta’s artistic practice emanates from an inward focus that radiates outward. Documenting her daily rituals, collecting artifacts during her strolls, and amassing remnants from both her home and studio are integral components of her ongoing process of capturing the contemporary moment. Central to her work is a keen fascination with the materiality of objects and a proclivity for repetitive labor. These elements converge, enabling Ratna to explore her preoccupation with the relentless march of time, the intricacies of memory, and the preservation of ephemeral fragments. As her artistic journey evolves, it remains steadfastly rooted in contemplations of consumption, disposal habits, and the infusion of disruption and transformation into these everyday cycles.

Born in Mumbai, Ratna completed her B.A. from St. Xavier's College, Mumbai, in 2000, and pursued Graphic Design at Weighan and Leigh College in 2001. She furthered her studies with a three-year B.A. Honors in Book Arts and Crafts at the London College of Printing (now London College of Communication) in 2005.

Ratna has garnered acclaim through various solo exhibitions. Her inaugural solo show, "Metamorphoses Retold" (2007), and the subsequent "Someday" (2009), both held at Gallery Beyond in Mumbai, marked the initiation of her artistic trajectory. International recognition followed with her first international solo, "You Will Die Soon" (2017), at Felix Frachon Gallery in Brussels. Another exhibition, "This Will Last and One Must Not Forget" (2021), also took place with the same gallery. She has exhibited twice at Sakshi Gallery, Mumbai, with "Everything Is Precious" (2018) and "while I make, I am waiting for time to pass" (2023).

In addition to her solo shows, Ratna has participated in numerous group exhibitions across India, in cities like Mumbai, New Delhi, Vadodara, and Goa. Her international presence is notable, with participation in group exhibitions in France, Singapore, New York, and Brussels.

Ratna lives and works in Mumbai.
